An inaugural function for a two-day orientation programme for First-Year Optional English students was organized on 14/07/2025 in the college auditorium by Manasa Trust and the Department of English, Katiil Ashok Pai Memorial College, Shivamogga.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Nagabhushan, Retired Principal of Kamala Nehru Memorial National College. Addressing the students of literature, he said that literature plays a major role in shaping the personality of students. The thoughts of literature students are distinct and unique. Literature should not be studied merely to score marks, but should be read for interest and enjoyment. Reading must be enjoyed. Classrooms are not just places for routine teaching; they are opportunities to elevate our thought processes and cultivate diverse ways of thinking.
He emphasized that when a student reads a prescribed text, they should imagine the author and the background of the text, and through deep study, internalize the work. Great writers like Kuvempu, Shivaram Karanth, Wordsworth, and Shakespeare are not confined to the pages of textbooks; through their works, they become a part of us. They have created a beautiful world of literature. During the three years of graduation, students should not limit literature to classrooms alone but should truly enjoy it. Literature reflects society. When a Shakespeare enters your classroom, or when a great writer enters your mind, you learn something profound. Literary activities enhance creativity. The course and college chosen by the students are excellent. He wished that their three-year student life be filled with enthusiasm and expressed confidence that under the guidance of excellent teachers, students would grow well and ultimately achieve great success.
Presiding over the function, Principal Dr. Sandhya Kaveri stated that throughout the academic year 2025–26, students should actively participate in the many programmes conducted by the college. The college provides numerous opportunities for the all-round development of students, and they should make good use of them to shape their future. She congratulated the students who have chosen English Literature as their optional subject and mentioned that studying Psychology along with Literature would be beneficial.
