The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth to take part in various government-led community service activities and programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide students with hands-on
experience in community service.
The National Service Scheme was officially launched on September 24, 1969, the centennial year of Mahatma Gandhiji’s birth. As a result, NSS Day is observed every year on September 24th. Mahatma Gandhi urged students to always keep their social responsibilities in mind.
The Motto of NSS is “Not me But You”. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service.
NSS Symbol is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of the NSS for social transformation and upliftment.
The NSS Badge:
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping the needy.
The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.
The Red colour in the badge signifies the energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers. The Navy Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.

Development of the personality of students through community service.
Objectives of NSS:
NSS aims at developing the following qualities/competencies among the volunteers:
- To understand the community in which the NSS volunteers work and to understand themselves in relation to their community;
- To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve themselves in problem-solving exercise;
- To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
- To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems;
- To gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
- To acquire leadership qualities and democratic values;
- To develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and
- To practice national integration and social harmony.
NSS attempts to establish meaningful linkages between ‘Campus and Community’, ‘College and Village’ and ‘Knowledge and Action’.
Benefits of Being an NSS Volunteer:
An NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would have the exposure and experience to be the following:
- an accomplished social leader
- an efficient administrator
- a person who understands human nature
We observe National festivals, National Youth Day, AIDS Day, and other days of importance. Students get opportunities to work with the least privileged by visiting Ashrams, old age homes and interacting with them. NSS volunteers also give a lot of awareness programmes to the community around either through street plays, rallies, slogan writings, painting, and so on. The NSS of the college adopted a village Konagavalli Thanda and the volunteers of the college NSS conduct community development programme at adopted village .
All of the NSS programmes thus aid in the growth of students’ personalities, development of self-confidence as well as a sense of dedication to service.

NSS Pledge– I solemnly pledge to work with dedication, to serve and strengthen the freedom and integrity of the Nation. I further affirm that, I shall never resort to violence and that all differences and disputes relating to religion, language, region, political and economic grievances shall be settled by peaceful and constitutional means.
